(Español ensiguida) This painting was commissioned by the Catholic order of the Claretians. They asked me to create my own interpretation of the Virgen de Guadalupe. I decided that I would paint an image that was true to the legend

The original Virgen was actually based on the indigenous deity, Tonantzin, the earth mother of the Mexica people. The conquering Europeans sought to Christianize her, so as to convert the people to their religion.

Over the years both the indigenous and Mestizo peoples of Mexico were able to re-appropriate Nuestra Senora and bring her back to her roots. Thus she indeed is the mother of us all.

LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE Esta pintura fue comisionada por La Orden Claretiana de la Iglesia Católica. Me pidieron que les diseñara mi propia interpretación de la Virgen de Guadalupe. Decidí pintar un imagen que conservara la esencia de la leyenda. En realidad la Virgen original fue basada en una diosa azteca conocida como Tonantzin, la madre tierra de la gente Mechica. Los conquistadores quisieron darle una naturaleza cristiana, con la meta de convertir el pueblo a su religión. A través de los años, los indígenas igual que el pueblo Mestizo de México, lograron apropiar de nuevo a Nuestra Señora y regresarla a sus raíces. Ya que es en hecho la madre de todos nosotros.
